I am learning how to compile linux in different ways and need input on what people use and don't use in there current version of linux.

When is the world going to get the clue that Microsoft is stringing us along telling us that the next version will be improved? To the tune of 300$ for the version that actualy works. Not to mention all the bugs and viruses.

Looking for some open source version of yahoo briefcase for my school. I am the tech person and would like for my students to be able to access their personal folders (windows network) over the web. I know there are high dollar pieces of software to do this, but as a k-12 school, there isn't much money. Not afraid of linux, but would rather be asp.

i am instaling java, im as superuser, on the java directory in the terminal, i put in "chmod a+x jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586-rpm.bin" to change the permision for instaling the java and it said there is no such file or directory, help? oh i am in the java directory, and i downloaded the java linux rpm(self extracting file). plz help, and hey, if it wprks, ull get 10points, plz help! cmon ppl, answer me! i have 2! use it, i have a chat room, i used 2 go on with lot of friends and a high lvl runescape account! answer and help me plz! im never gunna give up!

I tried to use the Shell function and it works ok if I do not give any arguments to the program I want to use, but for example, I would like to open a PDF file with Acrobat Reader. I did something like the example in MSDN online: Shell("""C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat\Reader\AcroRD32.exe"" my_pdf.pdf") But it doesn't work. I started thinking that I'm trying to do something in Windows, the Linux way (using shells) So if this is not the way to Open a new Program and tell it to open a file automatically, How can this be done? Thanks.

If so how do I get started? I got this older computer, and wanted to learn.. Will it download and install over windows?

Someone else has designed and built our database. Judging by the performance, he's done a great job. But I need to be able to find my way around it, write and run queries, etc. I'm fine with computers and have programmed, but ever since I tried to teach myself MS Access years ago, databases have given me the heebie jeebies. So I need to get past that and learn enough SQL to write my queries etc. The database is built on MS SQL Server running on MS Server 2003, and the apps round about it address it using a mixture of Perl and dotnet, running on a mixture of Windows and Linux. I don't need to learn dotnet but Perl would be a good one to get into. So are there any books or references that can help me here? Thanks!
