First off I don't belive that it is real but if you follow the theory it is possible. And as it cannot be disproven it "could" be real.

It is generally based on the theory that whatever goes into the brain through the sences is real. According to the movie, people are in an artificial world which affects all the sences. People live their entire lives doing their normal routine on a daily basis untill they die.

Now to debunk the theory I point out that often the sences are fooled in what they percieve to be real. Slight of hand is a good example. Your sences say that this happened when it is really that that happened.

Additionally for the matrix thing to work you would have to shut off the other sences (the real ones) or the subject will get conflicting signals.

Now the basis of the story is that Neo is searching for the truith about the world he belives to be real. That truith is that he is in the artificial world of the Matrix. The matrix was created after a war between man and intelligent machines went bad. Man was rounded up and made into a energy source for the machines.

Neo happens to be a christ figure who is destined to save humanity from that slave state. He learns to manipulate the matrix world and eventually can basically controll nearly everything in it. In the real world the machines have found the last bastion of humanity and are attempting to destroy it. Because of something Neo did in the matrix the big villan (Agent Smith who is a program in the matrix) becomes uber powerful. Almost beyond the capabilities of the system to deal with (pretty much a virus). Neo fights his way in the real world to meet with the A.I. computer and makes a deal to save humanity.

Now comes my theory. The A.I. found that there are humans who cannot exist within the controlled bounderies of the matrix and thus created a second layer of the matrix which humans escape to and they belive it is the real world. I can point to several things in the movie which lead me to this conclusion.
