Best way to design a time line?

I have aproject and need to put it into a time line, what's the best way to create a time line, gantt chart?? if so what softwares are available?

    The quickest way is to use Microsoft Project, but for my executive management I typically construct Excel Timeline Graphs. They like this a lot and I seldom have to answer questions.
