Website animation question?

What do I need in order to begin doing animation on the web. I am a self learner and just need the best software and other input so that I may put an animated scene on my website. I am talking something other than flash.

    Flash is the best software for animations on web , the latest version flash-8 is really very good. Apart from flash there is a software called toonboom www.ToonBoom.com

    If you are talking about other than flash, you will need to learn CSS, Javascript and Ajax (or more likely an Ajax API). A good place to start on CSS and Javascript is http://www.w3schools.com/ As far as Ajax goes, it depends on what toolkit you wind up using.
