    java doesn't change, they are up to date. after that you can learn XML or Perl!!!

    Each books were reedited. Now I can be wrong but from what I remeber the first one is already at the second edition and the 3-rd edition will be released next year and the second one is already at the 4'th edition. Differences between the editions consist of: new chapters, fixed errors, additional information... For learning the basics of JAVA programming it doesn't matter what edition you have, at least at first. After mastering the basics it will be much easier to advance!
