Anyone know of someone addicted to programming?

2006-08-12 19:07:43, Category: Programming & Design
Is there a programmers anonymous? My boyfriend doesn't stop ever. It takes up all of his free time. I know I enjoy programming sometimes, but I seriously can't sit in front of a computer for that long. It is his future and what he will be doing for the rest of his life, but I just wish that it wasn't all he did. Is there any kind way I can ask him to stop for maybe 30 minutes? He is going to be a software developer and I'm really proud of him. I just need a little advice.

What he is doing now is all about learning. That can be very addictive. I spent most of my life, now retired, in computers. A good part of it in design and development of mainframe systems. When the Apple II plus came out I got one. As far as my wife was concerned that was a big mistake. I worked all day then came home to play. If you have trouble getting his attention now, while his girlfriend, it will only get worse when you are married. It will be very hard to get his attention about this. It is very alluring and fun to discover new and better ways to develop something. But it is fool's gold. While it seems like you have discovered the most efficient and best way to develop a program it matters not. You are the only one who knows. So in doing this he will give up a lot of things, you for one, in the belief that it is for the good and for his future. That is a cop out. It is fun. It is fascinating, it is far better than playing a game because you have control. How you get his attention is up to you. Sex would do it but you can't hop in bed every time you want him to pay attention to you. But you must get through to him. Wake him up to what is important. In the long run he will thank you. If at some point you leave him I guarantee you he will have no idea why.

Computer users (thus the programmer too) need to rest and relax for 10 minutes evey hour. Looking at the farthest possible visible point (like looking out from window) would relax eyes always focused to near distance; and an ergonomic posture is required while sitting or he can suffer spinal problems and carpal tunnel syndrome. Also tell him to do jobs from rentacoder.com and make some money from home for the time he is spending. I am a computer engineer doing Ms. and have worked pro for many years, I have my own site where I sell software; make him read the next sentence : "Stop coding like 24/7 and show more attention to your girl friend or you will most definitely regret it. Consider this as an advice from a veteran coder." Loren Soth

A cute white Daisy needs no advice on how to get a guy to stop and focus on her for a while. You come naturally gifted and equipped to stop traffic on a busy freeway girl if you want to. Use it. ;-)

well you might try to get him to realize that he is going to be doing what he is doing right now forever. If he does not slow down and let his mind rest from it everyday. he will suffer burn out at an early age and there goes his career. Seen it happen in lot of different types of work, and it is truly sad. this one fella I know had been in the electrical component business for over 15 years. He had started a business and had turned it into one of the most successful in a 3 state region. He was working an average of 80 hours every week. I don't know how he took time out to have his wife and 2 kids, but they do exist, anyway, he was fine when he went to work at 5:00 am but by 9:00 am he froze in his chair. I mean he literally froze up. He couldn't talk, he could not focus, he did know his name but he could not make a sound, nor walk or make his arms move to do anything. I don't know how long he sat there before he was discovered and they called emergency, but he spent 6 months in a rehabilitation center and he cannot work to this day 10 years later. He literally worked himself into a sort of brain blow out. His body and brain could not take it any more. I have heard of other people having similar break downs. And they are never the same again. This should scare him a little bit anyway. Look it up on google or wikipedia it is well documented.
