Often times, Java is a short cut between programs. Don't be ignorant...Be the best at what you learn.

Many people in the field of technology fall into one of two types. The artistic and the technical. Some fortunate few are both. If you are the artistic type, and I would imagine with you taking this course, you are. Then I would recommend you do all your studying and training in that field. Java is a little far removed from design and I see no path between graphic design and Java to warrant learning it at this stage of your career. Many graphic designers do end up working in web development and so learn languages such as PHP, Perl, HTML, etc. Java is a system language and far removed from graphic design. Programming languages related to design and multimedia would be Flash Actionscript, PHP and HTML. It is often the case that a university or college will give everyone a 'common year' in which everyone learns the same set of subjects regardless of their field. If they fall into some defined group then they get that set of teaching - no matter whether its valid or not. If you're able to leave the Java course and you don't wish to do it then leave and put your energies into another more relevant field. If you wish to learn something very different for the fun of it then carry on. The choice is yours and I wish you all the best.
