I wipe out the operating system, and re-install it with out all the crap. or better yet, I install Linux (ubuntu is really easy and free!)

Install programs that U need... Antivirus, adobe acrobat and whatever U will need for school... Backups, do it regularly then U will have no qualms about reformatting ur laptop when anything crops up...

first defragment the hard drives. then install all the additional softwares you have. important ---Update your windows and antivirus. install some performance softwares like swipee or tuneup utilities. CAUTION--DO NOT ALLOW YOUR FRIENDS TO HANDLE YOUR NOTE BOOK.

At the top of any program window is the Menu Bar. And over at the right side of that is HELP. That tells how to do things.

for a start, don't be too greedy to install too much software, esp pirated software. Install what you need. Organise your data properly, it helps in the long run. (non tech advice, just organise properly)

You shouldn't need to do any back up because your laptop should come with all installed software and drivers in a backup for you. What I would do (for the less tech saavy people) is just to create a System Restore point. Go to All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Then, if you regestry becomes corrupted by virues, you can restore it to when you created the restore point. Now, just install what programs you use (office...) and go ahead and use it. Now, to get it ready for everyday use, I would get a couple programs: Antivirus, Firewall, Spyware detector. Just google the following to find them. Antivirus: I use a free one from avast antivirus. You computer may come with norton or mcafee. Firewall: ZoneAlarm, I use Sygate but I think they discontinued it. Windows XP SP2 also comes with a built in firewall. Spyware: Spybot and Windows Defender. I would really recommend using at least one of these.

burn any unreplaceable files or pics to a dvd/cd. the way the laptop came is restorable via the restore cd or system it came with so you really only need to backup new stuff you put on it in case of a crash. Run the defragmentation program in start/allprograms/accessories/system tools every day or two

Just install applications that you need work with, if you wanna use the net with your laptop, install some anti-virus software, if you already don't have one installed and a firewall ( I recommend Zone Alarm).
