How do i make a contact, faceparty style site?

2006-08-09 03:29:39, Category: Programming & Design
I want to make a site similar to faceparty or match.com for a specific need. I have made many websites before using frontpage 2000 and I know a lot about computers but its all self taught and i havent a clue how to go about making a site that can store people details and make them searchable by location, age etc. Is this too big a project for 1 person to undertake or is it easily done? I I understand html but have never used php, dreamweaver or anything modern. I am stuck with frontpage 2000 and html! Are there any good books i can learn from? Thank you for your answers so far. I dont mind it taking a few months to learn and i am intelligent with pcs so shouldnt be too hard. The powerboard one sounds very interesting. Keep em coming!

I've started using something called powerboard. It is essential a commnity site, which I think is what you are trying to acheive. It's very cheap and totally customizable. So you could start off with the basic boards and then use your skills to make it as sophisticated as you like. I'm just getting started with it, so haven't really customized it yet, but have a look on www.centrictravel.com/community Each person can add an avitar/photo of themselves, add details of location etc, leave messages on the board and message each other.

A project like this is definitely not too large for a single person. However if you want to even start a project like this you will have to get your feet at least wet in server side scripting (in PHP for example) and database management (such as MySQL). Not to burst your bubble, but if you do not have any type of knowledge in interactive web site design and creation you'll have to set your idea aside for awhile and start from the beginning. I understand that you know HTML, and that's great. You'll need to take the next step in understanding how to make your site dynamic and interactive. And you'll thank yourself for it. However I cannot recommend any books since I personally do not own any on web development. Below I'll list of a few online sources that could be resourceful to you and your site ideas.
