The web design industry has many, many people all soliciting for work which means you have to stand out from the crowd. Here's what you need to do: * Start designing sites for friends and family. Approach small local businesses and build sites for them. * Do NOT build sites using free webspace which has banner advertising at the top - it will never look professional in your portfolio. * Uability is king - this is your number one rule. Make a site which is functional first, then improve on the look of it. Always consider your users first. If they can't find what they want, they'll go elsewhere! * Make sure you have a strong website advertising yourself as a web designer, with links to the sites you've created. * For small businesses (who you would mostly be developing for in the short-term) design is more important than advanced functionality, so learn good design from other major websites. * Gradually learn the core extras to broader development - CSS and JavaScript are most important; then start learning SQL and a language like ASP or PHP. * If you want to make lots of money, hook up with other people - you will never be able to develop large-scale corporate website projects on your own; you would need specialist programmers, designers and graphic artists all working together. I am answering this as a web developer myself. If you require a mentor I am happy to offer support and advise for free - contact me at sellis(at)oxonline(dot)net.
