I have an unwanted white rectangle on the desktop screen that won't go away?

I have a dell pc with xp media edition. I changed my computers theme not long ago and decided to change again. When I did the second change, it developed a white rectangle in the upper middle of my screen, that is not all. I also have stairsteps of a transparent type from the lower right to the upper left of the screen. I changed it back to a simple theme, but the extras are still there. What have I done to it to make it do this, and how do I undo it? I have had this as an ongoing thing I keep trying to figure out on my own for almost 1 month now. I have tried system restore with no change as the result so that is not the solution I would say. any body got any ideas?

    Right click on your desktop. The pop-up box will tell you what background you are using.

    could be a video memory problem (the memory is going/gone bad). redirecting the background theme will stop it if its caused by the background,if its a memory problem it will stay in some form or another no matter what you have on the screen.

    right click press properties and u can probaly figure the rest out

    restart your pc and then when back at the desktop reset you desktop theme

    Normally when you refresh your screen this type of rectangle should go.........but like u saying its like this for last one month........it may be a virus.......it would be better you get your harddisk checked by an antivirus programme..........or alternatively you can format your harddisk (this should be the last option in any case) and reload windows..........but in that case you will all the information you had on your computer.
