Anybody who tells you eclipse is a moron :-p
They're heavily reliant on an IDE to do a bunch of work and eat up massive system resources.
Your best environment is the command line, and a text editor (like EditPlus, Crimson, or NotePad)

Eclipse is amazing. There is no better. Also check out the plugins available for Eclipse, there are many to choose from and it's easy to install.

Eclipse is version 3.2 now. Definitely it is the best in the Java IDE area.

Gel is a better thing for java(which also supports Applets,AWT,JDBC,Cobra,Security,Servelets etc...,)
