it sounds like something went wrong with your installation process. i would make sure you have all the system requirements, unistall it (make sure its completely removed int he add/remove software section) and reinstall it and read everything carefully that it might as you or give you options for.
The Problem you are facing is similar to what i faced when i tried to do the same. I even tried Installing all different types i.e client side, Lite Edition and all. It works fine until you dont reboot your computer but after
the reboot, it goes haywire. I tried hard but I couldnt get going. Sorry, But I cant help you, do post the answer if you get one to siiidakash@yahoo.co.in

This could be many things. Don't waste time reinstalling yet. You aren't getting what looks like a fatal error to me, just a TNS error.
* Do you have a database created?
* Is it up and running
* How did you configure the tnsnames.ora and listener.ora?
* Does your sqlnet.ora force you to use .world or .domain.com for your TNS entries?
* ensure your ORACLE_SID is set?
if this is UNIX: $ echo $ORACLE_SID
if this is windows, look for the environment variable
* Verify that your listener is up and running and is listening for this database (this step is not critical as you did NOT do scott/tiger@DTABS).
If you installed the server and you are having errors, then reinstalling it is not going to necessarily fix your problems. If this is a client only installation, it will be VERY easy to fix, because you really can't do that wrong.
