Why do websites upgrade so much...?

2006-08-03 11:20:32, Category: Programming & Design
Being a website designer myself I realize that it is almost a necessity but, don't they realize that the more times they upgrade a website, they end up having more bugs and issues to work out, and most of the time, the new updates don't look as good as the older versions...anybody agree with that?

The website needs to be planned from the beginning so that it can be upgraded without difficulty. This is why I am now using Joomla.

It depends on the upgrades and the nature of the work. A website doesn't need to be riddled with bugs, but when you're handed a project that was due yesterday (as I have on many occasions) they get what they ask for - and it'll turn out crappy. Then a month is spent fixing it. If the designer/programmer are asked to do an analysis and can provide proper time estimates then updates are usually good, beneficial, and bug free.

Websites are built on software, software that was meant to fit the needs of the people building it at that time. As with any software, people's needs change and it becomes outdated (known as code rot). Sometimes new updates are not as great as the old, but in many situations they are better. The real problem is that browser companies are at war with one another and decide to follow their own standards rather than those set out by organizations like the W3C (Even though Firefox meets the standards most of the time). I do agree with you that upgrades do offer the opportunity to introduce bugs, but that is with any software development. Its a flaw in humanity, not machines. I do believe we will eventually meet the goal of having problem free software.... then it will develop AI and kill us all. But until that day, I will settle for the occassional upgrades.
