Adobe InDesign is simply put a layout and design software package, with advanced word processing. it is used to bring elements assets from other applications (Photos from Photoshop, vector graphics from Illustrator) together in one document, and give you the option to add and edit text. It also manages advanced printing options and prepress for the designer as well. the advantage of InDesign over its competitor QuarkXPRESS is that InDesign is 100% compatible with all Adobe Applications, being able to import and export with ease. it has all teh saem tools as the other programs is a lot more user friendly. I have heard that there are some issues with high quality outputs (over 600dpi) in InDesign, but they may have fixed that.
The other disadvantage is that most of the printers our there dealing with professional level printing are still using Quark. But that is no longer an issue since most of it is done in Adobe .PDF anyways, which again InDesign creates seamlessly.
Hope that Helps
