what is an ip number and what does it do ?? also if someone has your ip number could they hack your computer

To prevent this you need to have a correctly configured firewall in place.

    An IP Number is a number given to a computer which should be unique within a network....if there are two computers connected to two different networks, they can have the same IP address... Even if one has your system's IP, they have access to your PC only when they have access to your network....normally anonymous access should be controlled by the firewall on the network server....

    The IP number is the address of your computer on the Internet, sort of like your house address on your street. They can't hack you just because they have that address, it takes more than just knowing your address. Just like a thief can come to your house, but just passing by doesn't hurt you - they have to really try to get in. That's why you should have some protection for your computer anyway, such as a firewall and some anti-virus software. It is like making sure your doors and windows are locked.
