I need a program that i can create backgrounds and other graphics in.

    For editing images, the top of the line of course is Adobe Photoshop. Its companion program, Adobe ImageReady, is specially designed for optimzing images for web page display and GIF animation as well as setting up table-based and css-based layouts from slices. Another good program is Adobe Fireworks (formerly from Macromedia). It's a lot like ImageReady but also allows the use of vector elements and can set up graphical drop-down or fly-out menus. If you're looking for a good, cheap source for high-quality photos and graphics for your web project, look no further than iStockphoto (www.istockphoto.com) where you will find tons of great stock and vectorized artwork for a buck a pop.
