Yeah I remember having to do reinstalls and having to reinstall Half-Life and Counter strike with Steams "Validation" and decryption, it takes hours.
The best way is to get a second drive and do a drive clone.
You can get free software here (Western Digitals Data Lifeguard) http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?swid=1, It works great for me (no more reinstalls). Just buy a cheap hard drive at least as big as the used space on your present drive. Install it and start Data Lifeguard. Click the drive you want to copy to (the new drive), click "install as boot drive" (even though your not using it as one) and copy it. When your done turn off the computer and unplug the new drive so it doesn't get changed in any way. If you ever have a problem (Virus, Install problems) just unplug your drive, plug in the clone (which is formatted as a boot drive) boot from it then reconnect your old drive after booting, start Data Lifeguard and copy it back, then unplug the clone again and reboot. 15 minutes and you have a fresh copy from when things were good. And you still have your backup clone for next time you have a problem. Just remember if you install new software after you clone do a new drive image (It sucks to have a problem and realize that your clone image doesn't have all your new software on it.)
Good Luck!

Well always keep the program installation kit in case you have problems with the installed program... just make 2 drives always (at least) one for OS (windows) and the other for games/movies/music + make a Kit directory where do u put your install kits.. and uninstalling + installing won't take more then 1-2minutes..I think
